Sarracenia purpurea ssp. venosa "White Ghost"
Sarracenia purpurea ssp. venosa is endemic to the Atlantic coastal plain of the United States, ranging from Maryland and Virginia south to the Florida panhandle and the Gulf Coast. It grows in open, sun drenched, nutrient deficient wetlands including bogs, pocosins, and seepage slopes where soil moisture is constant. This subspecies is primarily known for its squat, prostrate growth habit and pitchers with wide, ruffled hoods that are often heavily veined in deep red or purple and covered in fine, velvety hairs. This form is a tissue culture mutation created by Araflora nursery. This plant has low anthocyanins in the leaf (a lot in the veins) compared to most varieties, and will be a very pale green, nearly white in low-light conditions. It burns extremely easily outdoors, so be cautious putting it out in full sun year-round.
Care for this carnivorous plant is simple. I recommend using a mix of 1:1 peat moss to perlite, using the tray method to keep the substrate constantly wet with water under 50 PPM TDS. I grow them outdoors in zone 8a in full sun, year-round. I don't fertilize these plants at all as they catch plenty of bugs on their own.
As always, plants can look different with different amounts of light. The plants you receive may be a slightly different color than what is shown, either more colorful or more green depending on a variety of factors.
Please note this plant will ship potted unless you purchase a rhizome, in which case it will be bare root via USPS Priority Mail. Heat packs are not automatically included and generally not needed for Sarracenia. Small plants are generally first year seedlings or recent, smaller divisions and will make pitchers between 3-6". Medium plants will make 6-12" pitchers and will have 1-2 growth points. Large plants will have 1-4 growth points, are flowering size/age, and will make full size (12-36") pitchers. I try to avoid cutting any pitchers off of the plants in order to ship them.
