Drosera viridis (Serra de Ponta Grossa, Parana State, Brazil)
|
Drosera viridis is a perennial, rosetted sundew endemic to the highlands of southeastern Brazil, primarily found in the states of Paraná and São Paulo. It forms a compact, ground-hugging rosette of spatulate (spoon-shaped) leaves that are notable for remaining a vivid lime-green even when exposed to full, direct sunlight—a trait that distinguishes it from many of its red-hued relatives. It is typically found in high-altitude peat bogs and wet grasslands (campos rupestres), thriving in waterlogged, nutrient-poor soils often dominated by Sphagnum moss. While it is morphologically similar to Drosera communis, D. viridis is distinguished by its larger, light pink to lilac flowers and its elongated, fusiform (spindle-shaped) seeds, whereas D. communis produces shorter, more ovoid seeds and typically exhibits deep red coloration in high light.
As always, plants can look different with different amounts of light. The plants you receive may be a slightly different color than what is shown, either more colorful or more green depending on a variety of factors. Plants are between 1-1.5" in diameter. Care for this carnivorous plant is simple. I recommend using a mix of 1:1 long fiber sphagnum moss to perlite, using the tray method to keep the substrate constantly wet with water under 50 PPM TDS. I use a 14 hour photoperiod at about 250 PPFD, but you can use a natural photoperiod or anywhere from 10-16 hours. I normally spray the leaves with 1,000-2,500PPM MaxSea fertilizer weekly, or as often as I remember.
Please note this plant will ship potted via USPS Priority Mail. Heat packs are not automatically included. I offer a 72 and 96 hour heat pack as additions. Please make sure to add one of these options before completing your purchase to be eligible for live arrival guarantee if your day time temperatures are below 45°F.
