Drosera magnifica is a massive, perennial, caulescent (stem-forming) sundew endemic to a single location: the summit of Pico Padre Ângelo in Minas Gerais, Brazil. It is a specialist of high-altitude sandstone outcrops (campos rupestres), where it grows among cracks in rocks or in shallow, sandy soil at approximately 1,500 m. Notably, this species was the first plant discovered via photographs posted on a social media platform (Facebook) before being formally described in 2015. This plant needs highland temperatures and high humidity to thrive, though several growers state they grow it in cool intermediate conditions as well.

This species is distinguished by its extraordinary size, reaching up to 120 cm in total length, making it the largest sundew in the New World. Its most unique morphological feature is its multiple, branched inflorescences—a rarity for the genus—which can produce hundreds of small, pink flowers. It is most frequently compared to Drosera graminifolia and Drosera spiralis, but D. magnifica is easily separated by its woody, scrambling stems, its branched scapes, and its significantly more robust, sword-like leaves that do not exhibit the tight circinate (coiled) vernation typical of its relatives.

As always, plants can look different with different amounts of light. The plants you receive may be a slightly different color than what is shown, either more colorful or more green depending on a variety of factors. Plants are between 1.5-3" tall. Care for this carnivorous plant is simple. I recommend using a mix of 1:1:1:1 long fiber sphagnum moss, akadama, pumice, and kanuma, using the tray method to keep the substrate constantly wet with water under 50 PPM TDS. I use a 14 hour photoperiod at about 250 PPFD, but you can use a natural photoperiod or anywhere from 10-16 hours. I normally spray the leaves with 1,000-2,500PPM MaxSea fertilizer weekly, or as often as I remember.

Please note this plant will ship bare root via USPS Priority Mail. Heat packs are not automatically included. I offer a 72 and 96 hour heat pack as additions. Please make sure to add one of these options before completing your purchase to be eligible for live arrival guarantee if your day time temperatures are below 45°F.
