Utricularia chrysantha
|
Utricularia chrysantha (etymology: "golden-flowered") is a medium-sized terrestrial bladderwort endemic to the Northern Territory, Western Australia, and Queensland in Australia, along with Southern New Guinea. It is a characteristic species of low-altitude wet grasslands and Melaleuca/Acacia savannas, where it often grows supported by tall grasses on the margins of seasonal wetlands. This species is distinguished by its 4-lobed lower corolla lip (which can occasionally appear 3-lobed) and a palate usually marked with twin orange or brown spots. Its most unique morphological feature is the pandurate (violin-shaped) pore on its thick-walled capsule, a trait shared only with its closest relative, Utricularia fulva. While U. chrysantha is typically slender, it is notable for producing rare "mega-forms" with grossly swollen peduncles up to 3 mm thick. It is most frequently compared to U. fulva, but is easily separated by its yellow flowers and emarginate upper lip, whereas U. fulva has apricot-colored, red-speckled flowers and a deeply bifid upper lip.
