Genlisea pygmaea (Matto Grosso, BRA)

Genlisea pygmaea is a minute, annual or facultative perennial (in cultivation) species endemic to several states in southern Brazil, southwestern Venezuela, and a very small range in Colombia. It grows in nutrient-poor, seasonally flooded grasslands, swaps, or campo rupestres. It most typically grows in lowland habitats and often with G. violacea. It has yellow flowers, and has the smallest flowers of any species in the genus. This form specifically I grow in more lowland conditions. Plants may or may not be flowering at the time of purchase. You will receive a clump of this plant.

Care for this carnivorous plant is simple. I recommend using a mix of 1:1 chopped sphagnum, or blonde peat to quartz sand. I use a smaller deli cup inside of another cup, so I can see the traps, but this isn't necessary for cultivation. These plants like to be kept with the water line nearly at the top of the substrate most of the time, and prefer intermediate to warm intermediate temperatures. I use a 14 hour photo period at about 150 PPFD, but you can use a natural photo period or anywhere from 10-16 hours. I feed these plants a culture of ostracods in the water.
