Genlisea nigrocaulis (Serrano Huachamacre, VEN)

Genlisea nigrocaulis is a small, terrestrial corkscrew plant endemic to the Guiana Shield in northern South America, specifically Venezuela, Guyana, and northern Brazil. It is a primarily specialist of high-altitude tepui summits and damp savanna seeps, growing in water-saturated sandy peat and moss mats at elevations from 800 m to over 2,500 m. It's named after its dark brown to black inflorescence scapes, derived from the latin words nigro meaning black, and caulis, meaning stem or stalk. It has yellow flowers. This form specifically I grow in more lowland conditions. Plants may or may not be flowering at the time of purchase. You will receive a clump of this plant.

Care for this carnivorous plant is simple. I recommend using a mix of 1:1 chopped sphagnum, or blonde peat to quartz sand. I use a smaller deli cup inside of another cup, so I can see the traps, but this isn't necessary for cultivation. These plants like to be kept with the water line nearly at the top of the substrate most of the time, and prefer intermediate to warm intermediate temperatures. I use a 14 hour photo period at about 150 PPFD, but you can use a natural photo period or anywhere from 10-16 hours. I feed these plants a culture of ostracods in the water.
