dionaea-muscipula-venus-fly-trap-seeds
Dionaea muscipula / Venus Fly Trap seeds 25+

Dionaea muscipula (the Venus flytrap), arguably the most well-known carnivorous plant in the world, is a small perennial rosette-forming carnivorous plant endemic to the coastal plain of North and South Carolina. It grows primarily within a 90-mile radius around Wilmington, North Carolina and is a specialist of open, nutrient-poor, damp pine savannas, where it relies on periodic wildfires to eliminate larger competing vegetation and maintain full sun exposure.

This species is instantly distinguished by its highly modified snap-trap leaves, which consist of two hinged lobes lined with guard hairs (cilia) along the margins. The inner lobe contains three trigger hairs (trichomes) on the inner surface of each lobe that generate an electrical action potential to snap the trap shut when stimulated twice within several seconds. It is the monotypic member of its genus, meaning there are no similar species, though it is grouped within the Droseraceae family alongside Drosera, which are the closest carnivorous relatives to this remarkable plant.

Seeds from the Dionaea genus are small, typically ranging between 1.5 and 2.5 mm in length. Germination generally takes anywhere from 14 to 35 days under optimal conditions, but fresh seeds can sprout as soon as seven days after sowing. Cold stratification is not needed. I recommend sowing on a mix of washed peat moss and silica sand or perlite. The seeds in this offer are a mix crosses between many different cultivars from my collection, such as Wine Mouth, Godzilla, Schuppenstiel I, Double Face, Chinese Dumpling, King Henry, Aki Ryu, etc. As most cultivars do not pass their mutations on via seeds, I do not make an effort to collect seeds by parent plant.

This offer includes a packet of 25+ seeds per order. Seeds are wrapped in an origami paper envelope and put into a small plastic baggie. Please be careful when opening the packets as the seeds are extremely small (see photo(s)) Seeds are shipped in a padded, tracked envelope without a heat pack. I do not offer untracked shipping for seeds at this time.

Any photos of plants are representative of what a mature plant/leaves/flower, etc. may look like for reference only. Pictures of seeds are to show the size of seeds from this species.
